Encompass New Opera Theatre is dedicated to the creation, development and production of adventurous new music theatre and contemporary opera, as well as the revival of important musical works by American and international composers. In the vanguard of companies devoted to widening the recognition of America's outstanding composers, dramatists, singers and musicians, Encompass has, since its inception in 1976, produced over 63 full-scale productions with orchestra and staged readings of over 160 new works from jazz and cabaret to musicals and opera.

FROM STAGE TO STUDIO: Encompass brings its world-premiere production of Anna Christie to a global audience through a once-in-a-lifetime album experience! With music by Grammy nominated Ed Thomas and libretto by 8-time Tony winner, the late Joe Masteroff (Cabaret, She Loves Me), premiere production staged by international director Nancy Rhodes, 12-Time Grammy-Winning producer Thomas Z. Shepard (Sondheim, Bernstein) Grammy nominated conductor Julian Wachner, original cast and 14-piece orchestra will bring this moving score to life!

서유정 Yong-jung Seo (Shaman), Master 김금화 Keum-Hwa Kim (Master Shaman), Korea’s renowned charismatic national Shaman and lineage carrier of Korea’s important intangible cultural assets, and 이경자 Kyungja Lee (Novelist)
Claudio Jung, international opera baritone and professor at the Kookmin University of the Arts, and Director of the Opera Arts Management Institute. As a performer, he strives to break down the wall between traditional classical art and popular culture; and screenings of The Eagle Huntress (2016), Felt, Feelings, and Dreams (2013), and Taking Root: The Vision of Wangari Mathaai (2008).
Marie Jung, singer of traditional Korean vocal music and poetry, pursues new possibilities of traditional music in various genres such as drama, film music, dance and art; and screening of the film, Paradise With Side Effects.
LIVE MUSIC by SKY CARAVAN, violinist Milena Davidowicz & pianist Tim Brown, perform exciting Gypsy and Ukrainian music, an AZTEC DANCER CEREMONY by Cetiliztli Nauhcampa, and FILM SCREENINGS of: BORN TO BE WILD (2011), an inspiring story of the remarkable bond between humans and animals, and THE EAGLE HUNTRESS (2016), a thrilling true story that follows the quest of thirteen-year-old Aisholpan who is training to become the first female to raise an eagle fledgling from out of the nest and enter an all-male competition with her full-grown eagle on horseback.
Outdoor music and dance at 6:30pm in Union's Courtyard, with a special live performance in James Chapel, will be followed by a screening of TAKING ROOT: THE VISION OF WANGARI MAATHAI by Alan Dater and Lisa Merton. The story of Kenyan Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Wangari Maathai whose simple act of planting trees grew into a nationwide movement to safeguard the environment, protect human rights, and defend democracy.
Live Haitian music in James Chapel will be followed by a screening of the film FATHER JOSEPH (2015), a feature documentary of the remarkable life and work of the visionary Haitian priest who established Haiti’s largest micro-credit bank (Fonkoze), with the special mission of empowering hundreds of thousands of women and their families through literacy classes, small business training, and community building loans.
A NATIVE AMERICAN COURTYARD CEREMONY featuring the Leaf Arrow Story Tellers, NATIVE AMERICAN MUSIC performed by TIOKASIN GHOSTHORSE (Oyate Tokaheya Wicakiye) paying the ancient red cedar Lakota flute and SONI MORENO (Mayan/Apache/Yaqui), a film screening of AWAKE: A DREAM FROM STANDING ROCK (2017), and lastly a Q&A panel discussion led by Tiokasin Ghosthorse (Oyate Tokaheya Wicakiye), Leo Cordier (Sicangu Lakota), Shawnee Rice (Mohawk Nation of the Iroquois Confederacy), and Alyssa E. M. Wolverton.
OPENING CEREMONY: MOVE INTO THE LIGHT
A celebration of nature, water, and the stars featuring composer David DiChiera's "A Letter to Sarah," a New York Premiere, and Richard Pearson Thomas' chamber piece "Driving at Night" with singers, violin, piano, cello,and trumpet resonating throughout the chapel to lift spirits and encourage finding hope in challenging times. Singers Amy Gluck, Irwin Resse, Alicia Waller, and Mark Watson.
